Jer

“A World Convinced of Its Own Centrality”

Observed Classification:
Material Plane - Stable Physical Laws - High Cognitive Dissonance Saturation

Primary Phenomena:
Jer is a structurally stable, self-sustaining material plane governed by consistent physical laws and a highly developed system of internal logic.

Its defining anomaly is not environmental, but behavioral:

The dominant species demonstrates a persistent and near-universal tendency to assume that their understanding of reality is both complete… and correct.

Dominant Inhabitants:
Jerks (self-identified as “humans”)

Bipedal, highly adaptable organisms possessing advanced cognitive capability, opposable thumbs, and a remarkable talent for contradiction.

They are capable of:

  • Extraordinary cooperation and innovation

  • Profound cruelty and shortsightedness

  • Simultaneously holding mutually exclusive beliefs without apparent distress

Jerks display a unique trait among known species:

They frequently construct systems designed to improve their collective condition… and then proceed to undermine those systems with impressive consistency.

Environmental Notes:
Jer’s environments are diverse and, in many cases, quite beautiful:

  • Vast oceans and varied climates

  • Complex ecosystems with intricate interdependence

  • Regions of both natural splendor and deliberate alteration

Of particular note is the species’ tendency to reshape their environment to suit immediate needs, often at the expense of long-term stability.

Urban centers are dense hubs of activity, innovation, and contradiction - places where remarkable achievements and systemic inefficiencies coexist in close proximity.

Hazards to Travelers:

  • Conversational Entrapment:
Extended dialogue with Jerks may result in circular reasoning, unsolicited certainty, or the overwhelming urge to disengage abruptly.

  • Ideological Rigidity:
Strongly held beliefs may be defended regardless of contradictory evidence. Attempts at correction are often met with resistance rather than reconsideration.

  • Social Complexity Overload:
Hierarchies, customs, and expectations vary widely and are often unspoken, requiring careful navigation.

  • Predatory Ambition:
Individuals possessing significant wealth or power frequently demonstrate an insatiable drive to acquire more, often with little regard for consequence. Engagement with such figures carries a high risk of exploitation, manipulation, or becoming an unwitting asset in pursuits of accumulation.

  • Unpredictable Altruism:
Despite the above, individuals may exhibit unexpected kindness, generosity, or self-sacrifice, complicating all prior assessments.

Notable Specimens or Entities:

  • The Quiet Builders
Individuals or groups who create structures, systems, or works of lasting value with little recognition. Their contributions often persist long after their names are forgotten.

  • The Certain Voices
Figures who project absolute confidence in incomplete understanding. They tend to attract followers and amplify existing divisions.

  • The Unremarked Kind
Those who perform small acts of decency without acknowledgment. Their influence is subtle, yet disproportionately stabilizing.

  • The Accumulators
Individuals of exceptional wealth or influence who exhibit a singular preoccupation with further acquisition. Their reach is extensive, their motivations rarely moderated by restraint, and their actions often shape the broader trajectory of Jer in ways both overt and unseen.

Artifacts & Curiosities:

  • Records of Intent:
Documents, laws, and declarations outlining ideals frequently at odds with observed behavior.

  • Instruments of Connection:
Devices enabling instantaneous communication across vast distances. Equally capable of spreading insight and confusion.

  • Symbols of Value:
Objects imbued with collective meaning, often bearing little intrinsic worth beyond agreed perception. This includes, often to the exclusion of other objects, small green and white rectangular pieces of printed paper-like cloth.

Kelwyn’s Notes

Jer presents itself as a world of admirable structure - its laws consistent, its forms pleasingly predictable, its people possessed of a confidence most enviable in its certainty. One might, at a distance, be tempted to regard it as a finished work.

One would be mistaken.

There is, beneath the surface of that place, a peculiar tension - as though something within it strains quietly against an unseen confinement. The inhabitants speak, argue, and proclaim with great conviction, yet so often their words circle truths they do not quite touch, as though language itself were an imperfect vessel for something greater pressing to be expressed.

It is not their failures that arrest my attention, but their almosts.

Moments of beauty. Instances of unity. Works of staggering creativity that emerge, briefly, with a clarity that suggests… not invention, but remembrance.

I have come to suspect that the true magic of Jer does not reside in spell or sigil, nor in any formal discipline of the arcane. It lingers instead within their music - fragmented, scattered, and only partially understood even by those who create it. There are compositions, fleeting and rare, which seem to brush against something vast and sleeping, as though striking notes upon the bars of an unseen cage.

It is my belief - tentative, yet increasingly difficult to dismiss - that the people of Jer are not devoid of greater power, but rather… separated from it.

Contained.

What they produce now are echoes.

One day, I think, the correct arrangement will be found - a sequence of sound, precise and resonant, that will not merely be heard, but answered. A Master Song, if you will permit the indulgence, capable of unlocking that which has long been held just beyond their reach.

Whether such a moment would elevate them… or unmake them entirely, I cannot say.

I find, to my own mild surprise, that I hope to witness it.

From a safe distance, of course.

Post-Note:

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge a particularly volatile development within one of Jer’s more influential nation-states, wherein authority has, for the present moment, consolidated itself around a singular individual of most curious disposition. Said figure presents, at first encounter, as a creature of limited intellectual refinement - prone to impulsive declarations, erratic reasoning, and a theatricality that borders upon the absurd.

One cannot help but observe, with a measure of reluctant fascination, that he has taken to coloring himself in a vivid orange hue, not unlike certain male avians who adorn themselves with bright plumage in the hope of attracting a mate. The comparison, while uncharitable, proves difficult to dismiss.

And yet, it would be a grave miscalculation to regard him as merely ornamental.

There exists beneath this display a far more troubling quality - an intuitive grasp of influence untempered by restraint, coupled with a disposition wholly untroubled by consequence. In such a convergence, one finds a most dangerous archetype: not the cunning strategist, nor the wise ruler, but the figure who commands great power while neither fully comprehending it… nor fearing what may be done with it.
