Lovcruft

Entry Designation: Lovcruft

“Where Thought First Learned to Look Back”

Recorder: Kelwyn of Da’Ma
Classification: Prime Aberrant Origin Plane - Pre-Rational Cosmology - Sentient Conceptual Substrate
Archetype: Barren
Status: Restricted Access / Extreme Cognitive Hazard

Primary Phenomena

Reality within Lovcruft does not obey the expected hierarchy of existence. Thought does not give rise to matter, nor does matter give rise to thought. Instead, both emerge simultaneously - incomplete, unstable, and in quiet contradiction with one another.

Existence here is not constructed.

It is attempted.

And that attempt never resolves.

What presents itself as “being” is, upon closer inspection, something closer to failure - repetition without conclusion, emergence without completion.

Dominant Inhabitants

Lovcruftians (designation imposed; native identification resists linear translation)

To describe them as inhabitants is… generous.

They do not live within Lovcruft. They occur.

Their forms resist stability at every level, appearing to shift in response not only to angle and distance, but to the observer’s own cognitive state - as though they are partially authored by the act of being perceived.

Accounts describe:

  • Geometry that alters upon reconsideration
  • Limbs or structures that exist only when unobserved directly
  • Surfaces that cannot decide between flesh, mineral, fluid, or void

They do not move.

They resolve into relevance.

And once noticed, they begin to… refine themselves in response.

Not toward completion.

But toward something that almost resembles it.

Environmental Notes

Lovcruft does not possess terrain in any meaningful sense. What appears as landscape behaves like a byproduct of unresolved existence.

  • Angles fail to conclude
  • Distances hesitate, stretch, or collapse depending on attention
  • Structures resemble ruins, yet closer inspection suggests they were never built - only implied

The sky is not a sky, but an absence pretending to be one, populated by:

  • Constellations that drift without repetition or pattern
  • Vast forms that never fully arrive into visibility
  • Interruptions where reality is not changed, but replaced mid-observation

There is no gravity.

Only a suggestion of downwardness that is inconsistently respected.

And always - beneath perception, beneath thought - there is the sense of something vast that has not yet decided whether it exists… but is aware that you do.

Hazards to Travelers

Cognitive Refraction:
Thought ceases to be private. It distorts, echoes, and returns altered, eroding the boundary between internal and external cognition until both become indistinguishable.

Perceptual Collapse:
Efforts to fully interpret any structure or entity result in irreconcilable sensory contradiction. Sight, sound, and spatial reasoning detach from one another - often permanently.

Narrative Instability:
Causality fails to maintain sequence. Actions precede intent. Outcomes manifest without origin. Travelers frequently remember events that have not yet occurred - and cannot prevent them.

Attention Predation:
Certain phenomena respond to observation as sustenance. The longer one focuses, the less of the self remains to do the focusing.

Notable Entities & Phenomena

The Drowned Geometry
A region of partially submerged structures extending both upward and into unresolvable dimensional space. Its emitted “language” loops endlessly, containing meaning that never begins and never concludes.

The Unnamed Sleeper
A presence implied rather than observed. Entire regions subtly orient around it. Shifts in the plane suggest it is not dormant - merely repositioning within a state that does not yet qualify as existence.

The Choir Without Sequence
Entities producing overlapping tonal structures with no rhythm or order. Exposure results in simultaneous awareness of mutually exclusive realities - none of which can be dismissed.

Artifacts & Curiosities

Non-Euclidean Fragments:
Shards of impossible geometry that impose local inconsistencies upon space when handled.

Echoed Thoughts:
Concepts acquired within Lovcruft that persist after departure, continuing to evolve independently of their originator.

Residual Observations:
Memories without owners - impressions of prior travelers that remain, despite the absence of those who experienced them.

Kelwyn’s Notes

It is a most tempting indulgence, I find, to regard Lovcruft as a flaw - a grotesque misstep in the otherwise orderly unfolding of existence. Such a conclusion offers a certain comfort, for it implies that what lies within that place is an error… and therefore mercifully separate from us.

I do not believe this to be the case.

Lovcruft is not empty in the manner of a void, nor is it barren in any sense that might suggest absence. It is barren in a far more troubling fashion - it is a place in which existence itself has failed to take root properly. Not absent, but unachieved; not destroyed, but never fully realized.

One does not walk through a world there, as one might in any other plane of matter or thought. Rather, one moves through attempts - through structures that strive toward coherence yet falter before completion, through spaces that gesture toward form without ever committing to it. Everything suggests intention, and yet nothing arrives at conclusion.

There is something profoundly unsettling in witnessing reality before it has learned how to be real. Thought and matter persist in a state of quiet negotiation, neither willing - or perhaps neither able - to concede definition to the other. In that tension, something begins to form, as though the world itself were rehearsing its own existence.

But it never quite succeeds.

Lovcruft does not reject understanding, nor does it obscure itself out of malice or design. It simply precedes understanding, existing in that fragile and uncertain threshold before meaning is established and before structure is agreed upon.

And that, I think, is what I find most disturbing.

For if Lovcruft is not a corruption, nor an anomaly, but instead a beginning - a primordial state of reality still struggling toward coherence - then one must wonder how many other worlds we take for granted are merely further along that same unfinished path, their apparent stability nothing more than a later stage of the same uncertain process.

I avoid it, not out of fear of what is there, for there is little that could be said to truly be there in any complete sense, but out of a quieter and far more persistent dread - a fear of what it might eventually become, should it ever succeed in finishing itself.
